Trench collapse in drainage excavations
- Benching, battering or shields for trenches people enter beyond 1.5 m
- Spoil back from the edge; ladder access into the trench
- Inspect after rain before re-entry
Confined space entry (pits, tanks, under-floor voids)
- Confirm whether the space meets the confined space definition
- Entry permit, atmospheric testing and standby person where it does
- Never enter to rescue without the rescue plan being followed
Gas work — leaks and ignition
- Licensed gasfitter only; isolate and purge before cutting lines
- Test for leaks with detection fluid or instrument after work
- No ignition sources during purging
Sewage contact and biological exposure

Drainage trenches beyond 1.5 metres deep trigger the excavation category; pits and voids can trigger confined spaces; gas connections trigger work near pressurised gas infrastructure. Add mobile plant when an excavator digs the run. Few trades swing between 'no categories' and 'four categories' as often as plumbing — assess each job.

- Is an under-floor crawl space a confined space?
- Only if it meets the definition: not designed for occupancy, restricted entry, and a risk like engulfment or a harmful atmosphere. Many crawl spaces fail the atmosphere test after glue or gas work. If it qualifies, entry needs a permit, testing and a standby — a SWMS alone is not enough.
- Do I need a SWMS to connect gas appliances?
- Work near pressurised gas distribution mains or consumer piping is a high-risk category. Routine appliance swaps on an isolated line are argued both ways — but writing the SWMS is faster than the argument, and principal contractors will ask for it on any construction site.
- What depth of trench can I enter without support?
- The category line is 1.5 metres, but soil can kill at less — regulators prosecute collapses in shallower trenches under the general duty. The SWMS should record the competent person's ground assessment for anything a worker enters, whatever the depth.
